#LatinaGeeks partnered with WGU on November 30th for a discussion in Navigating the World of Data Analytics, in which Shealan Pream unveiled essential aspects of this dynamic field. The workshop underscored the indispensable role of data analytics in modern decision-making, emphasizing its influence on leadership and communication. Participants learned that Data Analytics is an ‘umbrella term’, offering diverse career paths, whether technical or business-oriented, also known as AI/ML, data science, and more. We learned the importance of acquiring adaptable skills aligned with the data analytics lifecycle, acknowledging the ever-changing nature of tools in the field. Shealan emphasized the importance of focusing on skills, rather than tethering participants to specific tools, and that success in data analytics demands a balance between programming, math and crucially, business influence. So much information was packed into this workshop, and we want to thank Shealan and the WGU team for providing such valuable insight and tips on data analytics to our community. Many people have met life-long friends through networking. We’ve seen it time and time again at our in-person #LatinaGeeks events back in 2019 and continue to see how beneficial it is when connecting with your comunidad. Building relationships through networking can help you make strides in your career. When someone you connect with thinks of you for an upcoming job offer, they’ll reach out because you’ll be top of mind. Or if you’re on the job hunt and remember connecting with a mutual person from that company, you could reach out as well. The benefits are endless! #2. Networking opens your mind to new ideas and philosophies. Hearing about what other people might be doing in their jobs inspires you and can spark a desire to learn new techniques or a new skill. Bringing new ideas to the table at your role will help you stand out and be successful. Networking provides a unique opportunity to learn growth strategies and make a personal connection with someone you might be inspired by. #3. Networking will give you an opportunity to engage with professionals at various levels in their career. At a networking event, there can be attendees from various companies and geographic locations. But did you consider how the person standing next to you could be the next CEO of Google? Anything is possible! Networking introduces you to experienced professionals. If you’re just starting in your career, this is a valuable way to get yourself out there and learn from the “less accessible” higher ups on a personal level. A handshake, eye contact and exchanging information is all that’s needed to make that connection. How To Leave Your Old Job On Good Terms

“New Year, New You”, that’s the saying, right? Well, maybe that “new you” has a new job? However, leaving a job that you know can be painful and scary. Well, it doesn’t have to be. You can leave your old job with some grace and dignity. 1. THINK OF THE REASONS YOU ARE LEAVING Take some time out and think of the reasons you want to leave your job. Is it an uncomfortable environment? Are you bored of your role? Do you need a pay raise and your current company cannot give it to you? These reasons will help you determine what type of new job you want, and when you need to leave your current job. 2. GIVE AMPLE NOTICE Once you find a new job or just know it is time to go, set up a time with your direct manager to let them know you are leaving. Although two weeks is standard (unless your contract says otherwise), it’s always a good idea to give more time. Especially if you are hitting a busy season at your company. Do give the exact day your last day will be. However, we must say, if your company has a tendency to escort employees out the door once they give their notice, then do not give them two weeks. Prepare yourself in advance, by tying up any loose ends. 3. TELL YOUR COWORKERS AND WRAP THINGS UP Tell your coworkers once you tell your direct manager. You can send a mass email, to everyone on your team and if you need to, send an email to clients. This is not only to let them know but to keep in touch. Set up 1:1 meetings with people who will be taking over your tasks during transitions, transfer access to any files to the correct people, etc. 4. OFFER TO TRAIN YOUR REPLACEMENT If the environment and time allow, offer to train your replacement. If you’re not able to train your replacement because of timing, offer to create a guide. This allows you to leave on good terms. 5. HUG YOURSELF AMIGA Once you are in your new job, give yourself a hug. You left your previous company on good terms and on your own time.

Amigas, Microsoft recently launched a new program that will allow you to earn an industry-recognized Microsoft certification at a reduced cost until March 31, 2021. But you must act pretty fast as we are soon approaching the end of 2020. For a limited time, Microsoft is helping those who were impacted by COVID-19 to learn the skills for in-demand roles in a more digital economy. COVID-19 has created a global economic crisis, forcing tens of millions of people around the world out of work. Some of the jobs lost will not come back, or at least not fast enough to meet demand. Those that do come back will look different, requiring more digital skills as companies race to change the way they work to respond to and recover from the pandemic. Other jobs will become more “tech-enabled,” requiring job seekers to have some level of digital fluency to be able to pursue them.
